The film, whose domestic box office grosses totaled $293 million, generated 24 percent of its week-one disc sales from the Blu-ray Disc format, a new high for a family film.
Despite the high sales tally, there was enough rental demand for "Up" to snag a second-place finish on Home Media Magazine's rental chart for the week ended November 15. There, "Up" was outpaced by "The Ugly Truth," a romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl that earned $88.9 million in U.S. theaters.
The previous week's top rental, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," dropped to the No. 3 spot.
On the sales chart, "The Ugly Truth" bowed at No. 2. But its unit sales amounted to a scant 16.3 percent of those of "Up," which, according to Home Media Magazine market research estimates, are nearing the 5 million-unit mark after only six days in stores.
"G.I. Joe" also slipped to No. 3 on the sales chart.
Just behind "Up" on the Blu-ray Disc chart was fellow Pixar hit "Monsters, Inc.", which debuted on Blu-ray the same day as "Up" and took the No. 2 slot. Sales of the Blu-ray "Monsters, Inc." were so strong that the film bowed at the No. 6 spot on the overall sales chart.
